The High Price of Having No Mice

Yes, Mom, I'm a poet AND I know it.

It's a first. First Fall/Winter since our move to the country that we have not had mice move in for the winter. But it has come at a price.

I share the feelings of a friend who recently said, "I love kittens, but cats...not so much." I've decided I'm not really a cat person. But I prefer a cat in the house to a mouse in the house.

Besides the vet bills, cat food, kitty litter and flea control, there are even greater, more sacrificial costs.

First, there's my upholstered pieces of furniture that have become scratching posts. Is it cruel to have her de-clawed? Wouldn't that mean she could never go outside?

There's the constant battle with cat hair.

Have you ever tried to crochet with a cat around? Chasing the yarn ball is NOT, I repeat NOT cute.

Worse yet, is the 4:40 a.m. wake-up call. Can a person NEVER sleep in??? She doesn't really NEED anything. Doesn't want to go outside. Plenty of food and water in the bowl. Just thinks it's time for me to give her some attention. I thought cats were anti-social. Not Stella.

However....

Having no mice.....is nice.

Yesterday I cried.

Twice.

The first was a good long cry. Neal was patiently demonstrating to me how to attach chains to my tires, just in case I need them this winter. I understood the procedure. I just couldn't do it. My arthritic hands are just too weak. It makes me feel helpless. Poor...pitiful...me.

So when I quit my blubbering, I went in the house and pulled out the last of the cinnamon roll dough. I may not be able to install tire chains, but I KNOW I can make cinnamon rolls. At least I thought I could. After smearing the dough with butter and dumping on the suger, I started sprinkling the cinnamon. But it didn't look right. That's because it wasn't cinnamon. It was chili powder.

Hence....the second outburst of the day.

Neal is keeping his distance.

Celebrating with Friends

December 30th marked 35 years of marriage. And we're still smiling.

Has it always been easy? Um, no.

I would venture to say we're now at that ~~dreaded~~ epic milestone that we can start giving marital advice. So for those of you still struggling in the early stages of marriage, listen up.

#1. Love God. That's it. Love God. I could probably stop here, as that pretty much sums up the entirety of life...marriage being just one small fraction.

#2. Be committed. And I don't mean to an asylum. Although at times, you'll feel you need the break.

#3. Find (and be) good friends.

Here are ours.

And though you may think it odd that we choose to celebrate our anniversaries with each other, rather than a romantic evening alone, we think it makes perfect sense.

A Christmas to Remember

And I quote, "Mom, this will go down in the books as one of the best Christmases ever!"

We've talked for years about a destination Christmas. Well this year--albeit last minute--we (sort of) planned a ski trip to New Mexico. And by that I mean I planned a ski trip to New Mexico. So not only do I accept the blame for poorly planned routes, I also claim the credit for a wonderful Christmas vacation.

Despite long hours in the car (my grandkids are the best travelers in the universe) and a few treacherous roadways, we had a very memorable holiday in the Sacramento Mountains.

Oh the weather outside is frightful,

But the fire is so delightful,

And since we've no place to go...

This is Lauren's expression from the minute she gets up in the morning until she hits the sack. Unless you interrupt her in mid-song. Then she gives you the evil-eye.

Here are a few things we learned:

1. Tire chains or 4-wheel drive is a must.

2. Heavy duty trash bags will NOT hold up at a speed of 75 mph. Bite the bullet and purchase or rent an enclosed carrier for the luggage rack.

3. There are no towns/restrooms between Odessa, TX and Ruidoso NM. (At least none worthy of a rest stop.)

4. Phone signals are few and far between in New Mexico.

5. Kids need ALL-DAY ski school. Not just 90 minutes.

6. As much as you may love coffee, the third cup is not worth the ordeal of removing layers of ski clothes in a tiny bathroom stall.

7. Santa CAN find you in Ruidoso and doesn't need a chimney to enter the cabin. I know. Freaky.

Pre-Holiday Getaway

I spent the weekend with some pretty terrific gals in Branson. The best way to begin a hectic holiday season is definitely a few days of relaxation. In a condo on the lake.

With shopping and restaurants nearby.

There's a lot more to these ladies than meets the eye. I learned two very important pieces of information over the weekend (besides the fact that you should always pack Christmas colors). #1. Did you know that all fuel gauges have a red arrow that points to the side of the vehicle with the gas tank? ME NEITHER! Great little tidbit if you drive lots of rental cars. #2. I cannot for the life of me remember #2. But at least I'm not stressing over it.

There was cooking, crocheting, movie-watching, shopping, eating, "quick scrabble" playing, jacuzzi soaking, and lots and lots of talking. We also managed to sleep a little.

Sunday morning we were greeted with God's beautiful display of frost.

After almost 3 months, I'm finally wrapping up my European journal. Do I hear a collective sigh of relief?

Friday was our last full day and we definitely did not waste it. Grand finale--Versailles!

We left Versailles to return to Paris for an early flight Saturday morning. Our timing wasn't great, as we ended up in 5:00 traffic in Paris, with an empty gas tank. But every misadventure turns into a great story. I'm sure someone (Susan?) has pictures of our mighty leader begging various Parisiennes to use their credit card to buy our gas, and let him pay them in Euros. The credit card story is another debacle. The U.S. has GOT to get on board with the "chip" card!!! That will be my next crusade.

Thus ends the great European adventure. Ready to go back next year. Who's with me?

Mâcon

Thursday we reluctantly left Switzerland. Destination--Mâcon, France. And can I just tell you how excited I am to have finally figured out how to put the little carrot-top on the a?

Mâcon (I may have to type that word several times just cause I'm so proud of myself) was how you say....vewee dee-fer-ant. Probably THE most strange/different city we visited.

Here's something interesting. The Wooden House--circa 1490-1510.

It was adorned with rows of these ugly carved monkeys. In several different "awkward" positions.

They really kinda creeped me out.

And then we had dinner at the most extravagant, expensive restaurant of the entire trip. There were like 23 courses or something. Janet dressed up for the occasion. Wearing her SSCC VBS t-shirt (that she slept in the night before) with a pirate on the front...circa 2011. We tried to nonchalantly fade her into the background. But she doesn't make it easy.

And our trip is far from winding down.

First stop is Thun, where we made the long climb up to the castle...

and enjoyed the view of the lake (Thunness).

Then it was on to our destination of Lauterbrunnen.

The next three days were all about scenery, nature, fresh Alpine air and relaxation. We had seen--and would see--some beautiful places in Europe, but Switzerland, ahhh, Switzerland was the best.

Good thing we were all still getting along.

This would've been the perfect place to throw someone over a cliff.

Not that the thought even occurred to me.

Just sayin'. This would've been the perfect place.

Who knew such a small amount of snow could make so many snowballs? :)

The Neverending Story

Actually we were wishing that it WOULD never end. Every new country, new city, new restroom stop, was an adventure.

This is the end of day 6 (Monday evening) and I think the girls still look pretty chipper.

We got even chippier when we discovered that this hotel had wi-fi. And all our fb friends would now be inundated with every obnoxious detail and movement.

Tuesday morning, we began our journey to Switzerland, but we weren't done with Germany yet. We spent some time in Freiburg...

...where they were busy setting up their daily market in the town square...

These waters are said to have healing qualities.

And I'm pretty sure Gideon would choose me.

If my memory serves me, I think this is where the first breakdown in communication occurred. Greg said to meet back at the car at 12:00. Janet was sure he said 12:30. So for 30 minutes, Greg was convinced that we were lost or kidnapped. No such luck, Greg. We're yours for the entire trip.

This is also where I purchased my infamous souvenir. The one that I've now been informed is a replica of the German "Iron Cross."

The only thing missing is the swastika in the middle. So here's my question. Do I still wear it? It's super cute!

Disaster Relief

We've experienced 3 significant quakes since Friday. Whut????

Initially, we were relieved that no damage was sustained to our lovely home as a result of the violent shaking.

But upon further inspection, I was devastated to find this....

Belgium to Germany via Luxembourg

We're on the sixth day of our 10-day European trip. So hang in there, I'm almost done babbling. But the best scenery is yet to come, so prepare yourself for a myriad of photos.

I'll try to be brief. Luxembourg is tiny (998 sq. miles) beautiful and delicious.

(I want to use this in Scrabble.)

Battle of the Bulge

I can't seem to stay home long enough to finish posting my European trip. So this post is coming to you live, from Canada. Try to keep up.

While visiting the Frerot's in Belgium, we took a drive to Bastogne, which is practically on the border of Belgium and Luxembourg. It's home to a war memorial dedicated to the American soldiers who were killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944.

Seeing the name of our great state engraved on this monument was really quite emotional.

Over 3000 American soldiers are buried here.

An eternal friendship was forged between the American and Belgium people in their common fight against the enemy of all free people.

With a great sense of gratitude, Jean-Marie stated, "If not for the Americans, we would be speaking German today."

So I am thankful for the involvment of the U.S. and the sacrifice of these soldiers. My French may be weak, but my German vocabulary is non-existent.

Random Stuff

Since Jeremy's truck was here this morning, and I didn't hear a lawn mower or weed eater running, I assume he was deer hunting. I also didn't hear any shots fired.

But I "shot" this around 10:30.

Guess he shoulda stuck around a little longer.

I'm generally pretty conscientious with money. Frugal, you might say. Okay, sometimes I'm a cheap-skate. But yesterday I went over to the dark side. I had let the Macy's cosmetic lady talk me into getting a consultation with a makeup artist. Just $50 which was redeemable in products - so I'm thinkin two mascaras, right? Never mind that my own daughter-in-law is a makeup artist. Duh. (But of course, she would never tell me I had flaws, much less how to disguise them.) So.....as the skin care and color were applied, layer after layer...the sales pitch got thicker and thicker. "How do you like the way this feels?" "It's great." (highlight product name) "This color is great on you." "Yeah, I really like it." (highlight) By the time I checked out, I was in total...speechless...shock! FIVE HUNDRED and EIGHT-FIVE dollars???? I had just talked myself out of a pair of $59 shoes, 'cause they weren't on sale, for pete's sake!!!! I really thought I was smarter than this.

What's even more incredible, is that I actually left the store with my $600 bag of products. ...and a knot the size of Texas in my stomach. I choose that simile because that's where the man is that is going to explode when he finds out about this little shopping spree.

Well. You'll be relieved to know that I went unshopping this morning and returned EVERYTHING. Dave Ramsey would be so proud.

In other news. Stella was missing again this morning. Very out-of-character for her not to be meowing at the door at the break of dawn. When I went unshopping, I put Sophie back outside with instructions to go find her sister. And she did.

No Autographs, Please

In utter desperation, the MDCOC co-ed softball team needed an emergency substitute. SC asked if I had ever played softball. Yeah, some 20-odd years ago, for a ragtag team that never won a game. Great, he said, I'll put you on the list. (Lita, Lita, Lita, when will you ever learn to JUST SAY NO?)

So I got the text around 3:00 p.m. -- You're On! To which I replied -- Crap!

Obviously God did not see fit to answer my Plan A prayer for the ailing player to recover. Now for the Plan B prayer, "Please don't let me fracture a bone or throw my shoulder out or make a total fool of myself."

Being the oldest player on the team, I got to choose my fielding and batting positions. Right field, batting 10th. Also, due to my oldest player status, I did not get heckled. At least if I did, I couldn't hear it...one of the perks of getting old.

The first team had too many lefties, and I was forced to field the ball. I could hear the screams, "home, home, home!" Are you kidding me???? It's 17 miles from right field to home. I'll just throw the ball as far as I can and hope it lands closer to the diamond than it was when it left my hand.

I was actually on base several times (thanks SC for the free walk). At one point, I was standing on 3rd and my coach's instructions included: "run as fast as you can, and if you flail your arms, you'll scare the catcher." That shouldn't be much of a departure from my typical running style.

So, all in all, I think it was a pretty good night. I had fun, which seems to be the ultimate goal of the team. And I didn't have to curl up in a fetal position in the crater in right field. Bonus--I was able to get out of bed this morning.

Now. If I just had someone to lift my coffee cup and bring me some Advil.

Mission Quite Possible

The main mission of our trip (whether you choose to believe it or not) was to visit our "missionaries" in Verviers, Belgium. To encourage--and be encouraged. Mission accomplished.

Saturday we took a short tour of the town. Didn't take long, as it's rather small. But beautiful, nonetheless.

This old church was magnificent.

I loved the huge door. In fact, I noticed that I have lots of pictures of doors from my trip. I should do a whole blog on doors! My obsession with doors probably says something disturbing about my psyche. But if that's the case, then Susan should be committed. Just sayin'.

Here are our precious friends and co-workers in the kingdom. Jean-Marie and Suzanne.

I will never see or hear the word hospitality again without thinking of these two.

After a lovely lunch, we went downtown to their place of worship.

Tiny office with books to the ceiling. This is definitely Jean's happy place.

Then they took us to an overlook of Lac Gillete, their water supply.

As if we weren't still stuffed from Suzanne's spread at lunch...

...we stopped in Malmedy for an afternoon snack.

Have I mentioned that I ate Belgian waffles in Belgium? Hmmm?

Or that there would even be a question as to whether or not I would top them off with cream and Belgian chocolate syrup? Hmmm?

It was a long, but fantastic day that ended with pizza. (Everyone knows ya gotta have pizza on Sunday.)

The guys took forever finding a parking place while the girls entertained themselves in the restaurant.

We LOVED our time with the Frerot's and hated to say good-bye. This was the emotional highlight of our trip. Can't wait to see them again!

The Netherlands

And now we return to our regularly scheduled blogspot.

It has now been 5 weeks since my return from Europe. In that 5 weeks, I made a brief trip home (Canada) and a vacation trip with Neal to Maine. But I have to finish blogging about Europe because there's just way more to show-n-tell.

The Netherlands was not really so much a destination as it was a necessity. The hotels in Belgium's Verviers region were booked up for a Nascar-type race on the weekend we visited. So we found a hotel across the border in Holland.

Remember this trivia as it becomes significant later.

With some time to kill Saturday morning, we headed north to the charming village of Valkenburg.

Janet wasted no time hitting the shops.

And I wasted no time finding the perfect subject for my photos.

Of course, I meant the bread. :)

It was a beautiful day for outdoor dining!

Now, remember the 3rd floor balcony?

This hotel had a curfew of 11:00 p.m. They lock up and turn the lights off, and you'd better be back in your room.

On Sunday night, our missionaries in Belgium had kept us out quite late...rebels that they are. And we were bookin' it trying to make curfew. We pulled into the parking lot a 10:56 (collective sigh). But the night agent must've had a date and decided to leave early. So, of course, we were locked out!

I did not relish the idea of sleeping in the car with my four travel companions. Nothing personal.

Us girls had been a little annoyed that the cleaning crew kept leaving our balcony door unlocked. But on this particular night, we hoped they had done it again.

So with a great deal of noise, furniture shuffling and uncontrollable, hysterical laughter, we stacked 2 patio tables and a chair and sent Ted over the rail to break into our room, just as the village clock chimed 11 times.

I rarely print photos anymore, fill albums or create scrapbooks. But I do publish my blog annually and make $millions$. (Just seeing if you're paying attention.) But seriously, it's the easiest way to keep a written record of memories. And maybe one day my great, great grandchildren will get a kick out of reading what their dear old ancestors were up to back in the good ole days.

So, before we head back to Europe (in blogger world), I have to post some of my favorite photos from Maine. This may take two or three posts. You've been given fair warning.

Bucket List Item #4

Neal's "bucket list" is now a little shorter. He has always wanted to go to Maine and eat all the lobster his poor little tummy could handle. And that is just what he has done. At the end of Day 3, we actually ate PIZZA. Although he was disappointed that lobster was not one of the topping choices.

The lobster pounds are definitely the cheapest way to go.

You just pick out your catch of the day...

They throw 'em in a pot of boiling sea water...

And serve 'em up...

No frills, no bibs, no plates.

We have followed the lobster from the docks to the table.

And have not been disappointed. If you're headed that direction, I'll be happy to give you our list of recommended restaurants, cafes and lobster pounds.

The Plane in Maine Stays Mainly in the Rain

I'm here to tell ya, it is NOT easy to get from Tulsa to Bangor.

Connections in Minneapolis and Laguardia.....and Hartford, CT. That's the one they don't tell you about. Due to a low ceiling (besides the one in the puddle jumper's lavatory--which explains the bump on Neal's head) Laguardia was gridlocked and we were diverted to Hartford. Now the folks in Hartford didn't exactly roll out the red carpet for us. The only way they would grant us a gate was if we approached the 3-hr rule on the tarmac. Which we did.

We got to know our crew and fellow passengers quite well. Except for the terr0rist in front of us who kept his hood on the entire time! We met a lovely couple who lives in the Bar Harbor area. He's a biologist and counts bears for a living--Neal's dream job. She works for the Forestry Department--Neal's dream wife.

So they finally allowed us off the plane into the airport. Yay!!! The peanuts and pretzels were starting to wear off.

After the okay from NYC, we boarded again and headed back to Laguardia, which was actually in the opposite direction of our destination. And of course, our connection from there to Bangor was also delayed.

So...with another 4-hour layover, we followed our noses to the pizza place.

Make the most of every situation, I always say...or wish I always said.

We landed in Bangor around midnight and drove to Bar Harbor (arriving at 1:30 a.m.), where a perfectly charming room (and comfy bed) awaited us.

Vacation begins!

Brief departure from European posts. Thought you might need a break.

Stella went missing for 18 hours -- 2:00 p.m. Monday to 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. She uncharacteristically went outside during the daylight hours when I left to run errands Monday afternoon. No sign of her when I returned. No sign at dinnertime. No sign at bedtime. No sign Tuesday morning when Sophie returned from her nightly prowl. My common sense told me that yet another of my feline friends had ended up splattered on the road, or carried off by coyotes. Surprisingly, the strongest emotion was aggravation that I had just spent $70 on her at the Vet last week for an ear infection. Arghh!

As I was drinking my coffee and scanning the landscape it hit me. I had gotten some things out of the garage Monday before I ran errands. Could she possibly have slipped in there and gotten trapped? Affirmative.

Poor kitty. It was hot yesterday, and even hotter in that garage.

Now, I know she didn't go 18 hours without needing to potty. But I haven't gotten the courage yet to go back in there to inspect. If I wait long enough, it'll disintegrate, right? She's getting back at me by refusing to cover her deposits in the litter box now.

But she's not wandering too far away from me, whether in the house or outdoors.

There are more mice to catch in her future. Happy ending.

We actually had a discussion as to whether or not we would visit the Louvre. Oh my goodness! I can't believe we almost missed this.

Apparently there has been some controversy about the three modern glass pyramids in the courtyard. I must say, I don't really fancy this particular blending of the old and the new. But then, I'm not an artist. I just love art.

Europe: The Travel

Greg ~~demanded~~ strongly suggested only carry-on bags. We're talking 10 days in Europe, folks. Does he realize that I check a bag for a weekend in Houston?

But, of course, being the "rule-follower" that I am, this is what I took with me. So when you see pics of me in the same clothes, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the same day or place. It's just what was relatively clean at the time.

From Tulsa to Dallas, I somehow was privileged to fly First-Class. (Thanks, Greg. Don't tell Janet that you love me more.) And man-oh-man, would I have loved this seat on the next 10-hour leg of the trip!

Though I would NEVER rub it in.....I did feel the need to photograph this momentus occasion...

...and also document that Janet was in Coach. "Hi, Elaine!!!! How are the pretzels back there?"

Traveling with Greg, was like traveling with the President. Not that I've ever traveled with the President. But this is how it must feel. He is a seasoned traveler, and has VIP status wherever he goes, and since we were his traveling companions, we got the same treatment.

Europe: The Food

Six countries in 10 days will require multiple posts. If this bores you, or you're just plain jealous, I'll get back to the daily ho-hum eventually.

I'm dedicating this entire post to the FOOD. Which, of course, is what vacation is all about, right? I mean, the sole purpose of our trip to Maine in a couple of weeks is to eat lobster.

For the record, I've had Belgian Chocolate, German Chocolate and Swiss Chocolate. I ate Swiss Cheese in Switzerland, Belgian Waffles in Belgium, Schveinschnitzel and Apple Struedel in Germany, and French Fries in France.

Our mantra was "be adventurous" and the Dallas airport was officially our kick-off meal. So we started off with a platter of oysters on the half-shell.

Don't let her kid you. She loved them so much, Greg and I had to fight for our share.

Of course, there was lots of snacking and free breakfasts, and Coke. Dinners were usually what I consider late...8:30-9:00ish. Most of the time, we all ordered something different and did lots of sharing. Loved all the breads and cheese. And chocolate, of course. Just now getting back into the gym routine and have a feeling I'll be paying for this for awhile.

The Move - Part II

The adventure begins. And none too soon. I knew the newlyweds were getting bored when they started playing with the magnetic alphabet on the refrigerator.

We got a pretty early start on Friday for our long day's drive. Jeff driving the U-Haul, Heather driving her car, and me driving Jeff's pickup. Fewer stops were made than I expected. Northeastern Oklahoma has been very arid this summer, and the further southwest we drove the arider it got. Maybe we were dehydrated. Although we did have to make one "emergency" stop somewhere in the Permian Basin. Not an official rest stop, mind you, but out in the middle of nowhere....leaving two obvious wet spots on the side of the road. The least they could've done was target a poor little mesquite tree or sage brush that hadn't seen moisture in decades. Sheesh!

Driving 10 hours in the heat can be awfully draining. So imagine our relief when we were met at the new apartment by SIX young, strong, energetic baseball players, ready to lug furniture and boxes up to the third floor. If not for them, we would've still been moving way into the night. Even with all the help, my calves are still aching from a gazillion trips up two flights of stairs.

I'll be the first to admit I am directionally challenged. And I rely way too much on the compass in my Honda, which was safely parked at my house in Oklahoma. But I had a gps, for heaven's sake. Still couldn't find my hotel. Finally, after almost an hour, just before I hit my breaking point (I felt tears forming around my dry eyeballs), there it was! An oasis in the desert. Literally. Well, sort of literally. A long, relaxing shower, then a king size bed all to myself. Nothing personal, Neal. Or Jacob. Or Lauren.

The Move - Part I

My son and new daughter-in-law have SO MUCH in common. That can be really good in a marriage. However, procrastination is not necessarily a good trait to share. They had a month--A MONTH, I TELL YOU--to pack up their belongings.

After renting the moving truck Thursday afternoon, the packing began. I will concede that they apparently had done a little sorting and organizing previous to this big day. And I stress the word "little."

With the help of big brother and two friends, they managed to get everything loaded before midnight. (I only assume this, since I had retired long before then.)

After a couple of hours trying to help gather up belongings and pack boxes, I came to the conclusion that it was not my fault they had waited until the 11th hour to get ready for their move. Lauren had been patiently, and sometimes not so patiently, waiting to swim. She was hot and sweaty and red faced when I finally said, "okay, let's get in the pool." To which she replied in dramatic fashion, "THANK. YOU. LORD. JESUS!"

By 10:30 (an hour past my bedtime) I squeezed my tired, achy body between my two grandchildren to get whatever precious little sleep I could before my alarm sounded at 5:15. Jacob was nestled up to my left shoulder, Lauren's head laying on my right shoulder. Dark and quiet. Sounds of breathing slowing to a gentle rhythm. Jacob: "I love you, Nana." Lauren: "I love you, Nana." Oh. My. Goodness. I can sleep when I'm dead.

The Past Month

My son and his new bride have been staying with me this past month. After hurried nuptial arrangements, they found out that their apartment in Texas wouldn't be ready until August 5. That seemed soooo far away, but now it's here.

It has been delightful. And handy. My daughter-in-law does laundry, cleans the kitchen and cuts my bangs. She also understands my obsession with reality tv and doesn't laugh when I cry. She's taken an interest in cooking...which I don't hate. Coming home to the smell of pot roast is pretty great.

Watching newlyweds could become addictive. They are so full of life and hope and excitement. And then there's the calm, peaceful moments. I heard them around 1:30 this morning--making nachos. (That's not the calm/peaceful moments I'm talking about.) They had just spent the previous hour and a half in the bed of Jeff's truck, looking at the Milky Way and counting shooting stars. Do I hear a collective "awwwww"?

Since the storm a couple of weeks ago took out my yard light, it is REALLY, REALLY dark out here in the boonies, and the stars are especially bright.

We're packing them up and leaving Friday. The forecast calls for a high of 105. Whew. That's a relief. I was afraid it would still be 114.

Birthday - Chapter 3

Friday afternoon. The whole pool to ourselves. Which wasn't necessarily a good thing when we almost drowned and there was no one to save us. A story for another day. I'm still traumatized.

This one passed the test.

We also finagled a Senior Citizen Discount on his meal.

We're cheap like that.

On the curb is a 20-something boy-man, talking loudly on his cell phone, obviously trying to connect with his ride. Boy-man: "What are you driving? No, I don't see you. Well, I see a van....an Escalade...and an older lady in...somethin'."

Yes, I have cats.

And, no, we haven't made the complete transition to "outdoor" cats.

So far, I haven't caught Stella in the act of scratching up the chairs. She seems to really like the scratching post. At least, she puts on a good show when I'm around.

But Sophie.

A few months ago, she seemed so innocent.

But she has turned into a very strange cat, indeed.

I've been wanting new furniture.

A Word to All the Sun Goddesses Out There

Had my first (and hopefully last) basal cell carcinoma removed today. Was I nervous? Scared. To. Death. But not about the knife.

I looked in the mirror last night and was horrified to see that I had a wee bit of a sunburn. What!?! My dermatologist is going to KILL me! But in all fairness (no pun intended), when it's 97 degrees and there's a big honkin' pool in your back yard...IT'S HARD Y'ALL!!!! Seriously. I tan fairly easily. Rarely burn. And with ~~age~~ maturity, I have been very diligent about applying plenty of sunscreen. I really can't imagine how it happened. My back ITCHED all day. A constant reminder of my sin.

Anyway, I confessed to the nurse and prayed the doctor would take it easy on me. If she noticed, she didn't mention it. Maybe she didn't want to pour salt in the wound--so to speak. When the doc stepped out, the nurse whispered, "I think you might get by with it."

When I got home this afternoon, I got a mirror out to get a closer look at the burn. It's a stinkin' rash! Heat rash? Hives? Allergic reaction? Who would know? Oh yeah. Maybe a DERMATOLOGIST! If only I hadn't been a wimp and just fessed up, maybe she could have looked at it and prescribed something for me. Sheesh! Live and learn. Live. And. Learn.

Vitamin D - I Highly Recommend It

I've been energy-challenged lately. After a doctor's visit Monday, I started back on Vitamin D. 5000 units Monday. 5000 units Tuesday. 10,000 units Wednesday. 5000 units Thursday. 10,000 units Friday. 5000 units today.

This morning, by 10:00 I had:

Made blueberry/bran muffins from scratch.
Done my daily Bible study.
Emptied the pool skimmer.
Done one load of laundry.
Changed the sheets on my bed.
Made a cheesecake (from scratch) for a dinner tonight.
Cleaned the kitchen.
Brought the garbage cart back from the highway and taken out the trash.
Cleaned the kitty litter box.
Brought my checkbook up to date.
Started the dishwasher.
Cleaned my bathroom.
Sorted 3 days worth of mail.

Yes. Vitamin D. The wonder drug.

Fraidy Hole

Everyone in Oklahoma should have one.

I have one.

And it's a big one...as you can see...in proportion to the aesthetically handcrafted charcoal grill placed strategically on top.

But here's the problem.

There's about 9 inches of water standing in the bottom. And who knows what else? I'm talking living, swimming, crawling, croaking creatures.

And this (I believe) is the reason for the problem.

Someone forgot the rule: Measure Twice -- Cut Once.

So. Until I find someone to make me a new door, we'll have to keep the Tornado Party at the Ringle's.

Great Bible study this morning! Uninterrupted time of meditation is so very precious.

Just have to share what God revealed to me today. Maybe it's not a new thought for you, but it really stirred my heart.

Death. It's what we live for!

We find it all around us. Friends...loved ones...loved ones of friends...we can't escape it. It brings us sadness and grief. BUT. Barring the second coming...it's the only portal to a literal face-to-face with the Creator of the universe. It's the means to get to our destination.

And although it's a joyful event in heaven, God knows that we will mourn. So he comforts us. Jesus went so far as to bring some back to life on earth. Not because this was a better place, but because he knew how we perceive death.

I know. We have other purposes while we're alive in our human bodies. And our journey is filled with blessings and opportunities. But in the end, when I'm on death's doorstep I hope I will say, "Death, where is your victory? This is what I've lived for!"

Never Again!

Never say never. But somebody please slap me back to reality if I EVER book the last Thursday night flight from Tulsa to Houston again.

Throughout the day, the website continued to show more and more delays. Last status check showed departure at 9:40 p.m.!!! I had reserved a rental car, so at least Neal wouldn't have to pick me up...but since the resort gate closes at 9:00, he would have to let me in. Actually, we ended up boarding around 8:00. It was an airline miracle.

The flight was turbulent, to say the least. The person sitting next to me jabbered away in Viet Namese. The family behind me conversed in Spanish. I was trying to read Harry Potter. Yes, I'm not only way behind the times, but I'm reading a juvenile novel...judge me if you like. I will not apologize. (I also try to read it in a British accent, 'cause I'm just that weird, which became very challenging, given the foreign conversations surrounding me.)

We landed around 9:40, but sat on the tarmac for almost an hour before we got a gate assignment. Nope, you can't get up and potty, we may be moving any second now. The flight attendant obviously didn't know I'd had a Diet Coke before leaving and a water during the flight. Nor did she care.

Finally. Arrival at the gate and a full stop. Yay!!! Oh but wait. They have to find a jet way to unload all of us. Are you kidding me? So close....and yet so far. Did they not know we were coming? Can't you just open up the slide/chute thingy and let us jump off?

Walking through the airport was very unsettling. I can't tell you how many times I've flown into Houston Hobby, but nothing looked familiar. I started wondering if I had even been on the right plane. Kept looking for signs that said "Hobby" but to no avail. My mind was cloudy and I was finding it difficult to keep my balance. I should never have taken that little siesta while waiting on the tarmac.

Baggage claim was a nightmare. Note to self: Only carry-ons from now on.

Collecting my rental car should be easy, right? After filling out all the forms, I went to the lot to fetch my car in space C-11. Wouldn't you know it? There's C-9. C-10. Space. Space. C-15. C-16. It's a conspiracy, I say. They're trying to make me think I've gone completely bonkers. Now I'd have to wait while they serviced other customers before they could re-assign me a car.

In my younger years, I was very adventurous. Didn't really get rattled much. But driving an unfamiliar car--which by the way I hate 'cause the brakes are too touchy and I need a pillow so I can see over the steering wheel--on wet roads, in the dark, not knowing where I'm going, IN HOUSTON is an adventure I can do without. I brought my gps, but could not find a place in the car to plug it in! So I just prayed that the battery would last until I saw familiar exit signs.

Arrived at my destination at 12:02, and even though Neal was on his way to the gate, there just happened to be a cadillac entering right in front of me. I don't think the resort staff was too happy with me. The little security golf cart with the flashing yellow light on top followed me all the way to the RV. "Believe me, Barney. You do not want to mess with me tonight."

Weekend Highlights

Saturday morning, a man in my yoga class started snoring during the last savasana (corpse pose). Which proves my theory that clearing one's mind is much simpler for men than women. Men just have to clear one thought, while the task is much greater for women, who have a million to-do's, worries and ideas bouncing around in their brains.

Enjoyed a wonderfully delicious luncheon among good friends to celebrate our neighbor's graduation from TU.

Drove 22 miles to purchase flowers and tomato plants. Found a great parking place, right next to the garden department. Reached for my purse and realized I'd left it at home. Drove 22 miles back home, then 22 miles back to the store, and of course...22 miles back home. That's right. Eight-eight miles. That's roughly $16 worth of gas. Fortunately, my thoughtful bosses had given me a gift card for Secretary's Day that covered the cost of the flowers. I found an equally good parking spot on the second trip and had a great visit with an old friend in the checkout line. I think that's called a serendipity or a "lagniappe" if you're Cajun.

I intended to buy "Big Boy" and "Beefsteak" tomato plants. But got home with "Big Boy" and "Bush Cherry." I'm not a fan of cherry tomatoes. But neither am I a fan of driving another 44 miles round trip to return them. So I will have plenty of cherry tomatoes to give away in August.

I got carried away and decided to plant flowers in the gate posts.

You probably can't tell, but the planters are taller than me. Which explains why I haven't bothered before. But being the resourceful person that I am, I drove this

I ate healthier today. Well, except for the Tostitos (with a hint of jalepeno) and guacamole. But that's "good" fat, right? Now I will "happy dance" for at least 30 minutes to work off the chips.

I have an external hard drive for back-up that's been sitting unopened for two months. Yesterday, I finally plugged it in. Now I need a Mac expert to tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong. Anyone? Anyone?

And now, I will dispel all misconceptions that I have any self-discipline whatsover...

...here's what I ate today: Egg McMuffin (could be worse), chocolate candy (bad), 22 oz. frozen cappuccino (bad), turkey sandwich (go me!), pastry from Ann's Bakery (weally, weally bad), and finally....three...count 'em...three slices of leftover pizza. I will now go run a mile and do 138 sit-ups. Or maybe just go to bed.

Summer is Coming!

At least that's what I thought yesterday. Today it is cold and rainy and feels like November.

But yesterday. Ahhhh. Yesterday was glorious!

We got tons of outdoor work done and still made time for our little munchkins.

Lauren was pretty happy that we got the porch swing fixed. I won't mention the incident that broke it. Let's just say...from now on we'll limit the swing occupancy to two.

She's usually cooperative when it comes to picture posing.

But I had to do some coaxing to get her out in front of the purple irises.

What she really wanted to do was open the pool. When I convinced her that that would not be happening today, she resorted to sitting on the diving board and dreaming about the hot summer days ahead.

Hmmm. Maybe just one foot.

Jacob and Papa fished.

Jacob was a tick magnet.

Don't even ask.

He's also obsessed with sticks.

He managed to retrieve frog eggs from the pond and attach them to his stick.

Don't look, Trista....He also found a frog.

....and threw in some sticks.

'Cause it has a blue stripe on its side. Of course, I should've known.

He and Papa were ecstatic to have a good reason to shoot the Red Ryder BB Gun.

I wasn't so thrilled with the reason.

Good Times

Fun drive home. Can raindrops be the size of golf balls? I thought for sure they were gonna break my windshield. Then it started to hail. Well...this can't be good. Do I try to drive through it and just get home? Do I pull over and wait it out? Driving 50 mph against hail is surely not safe. Pulled over...briefly. Then decided to just get home and in the garage.

Once safely in my garage, I tried to survey any damage. So far, so good. I'll know more tomorrow, when I can pull it out into the (please, Lord) sunlight.

But now a new dilemma. See, I'm not fortunate enough to have an attached garage. But...okay...I am fortunate to have a garage. Excuse the whining. I now have to get into the house. And I have on my brand new New Balance shoes. So, off they come--and run for cover. Ouch! Didn't think about the hazards of running barefoot over hail stones.

Safely in the house now, soaking my bruised feet. Good times in Oklahoma!

Last Supper

Terri and I went to Logan's Steakhouse Saturday night. My dear, sweet, innocent, strong, brave friend is getting her first installment of braces on Tuesday. It was exactly 7 years ago that I, too, was excited to undergo the same torture. Unbeknownst to me, it would be 24 months before my next steak. So I felt it my duty to not only warn her, but insist on sharing her last real meal.

Oh yes, my friend, chow down on the peanuts, because after Tuesday, it will not be worth the effort.

Angus beef, medium rare please. Enjoy every morsel. See the sour cream and butter on the baked potato? Next week, you will be living on such. Not the potato, mind you, but the sour cream and butter are a shoe-in. Basically anything that requires absolutely no movement of the jaws. Just swallowing.

You may think I'm cruel for pointing out all the disadvantages of braces. But I, personally, like to know ahead of time what I'm in for. Just tell me up-front, so I know what misery to expect.

I should've gotten a picture of your beautiful smile, which in 24 months will be even more beautiful. In the meantime, stock up on yogurt, ice cream, broth, and jello. At least you don't have a grown son who will refer to you as "brace-face" for the next couple of years.

It's Saturday and I Don't Have to Mow!

Which is why I have time to blog.

Big night out with Terri Tuesday. We saw "Aluminum" at the PAC. Although at times I felt like I had gone back 20 years and was watching my kids play with assorted dryer hoses, slinkies and tin foil, I did appreciate the energy of the young dancers. But really, just not my cuppa tea. The Belgian Waffle at IHOP afterwards gets two thumbs up, though.

Last evening was spent with a group of 30-somethings at my daughter-in-law's Spray Tan Party. I immediately accepted the invite early in the week, but as time progressed, so did my anxiety level. I had visions of George Hamilton or Robin Williams in "Old Dogs." Which is very appropriate because I was the oldest dog at the party. I had almost backed out when my "Aluminum" buddy said -- let's go for it. I think there were four of us there that were 50 & over. That helped. And the Spray Tan professional is indeed professional. She has recently moved to OK from California, where she sprayed Hollywood stars and has been featured in magazines. So. Long story, short. I am NOT orange. And I think she gave me abs! Yes! High five! And I must say, it was very energizing being around these young ladies. They are hilarious! LOVE THEM!

I went to yoga early this morning to get in 30 minutes of cardio on the track. There was an elderly woman there, instructing her tween and teen grandchildren on the proper use of the weight machines. Classic.

During my 30 minute walk, I multi-tasked by reviewing my latest memorization project in my head. The Sermon on the Mount. Proud to say I have successfully memorized through the end of Matthew 5. Right up to "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." One of the benefits of memorizing is that it makes you have to slow down and meditate on the scripture. I need something to slow down my thoughts. This seems to be working.

Yoga was tough today. I've missed the last 3 weeks, and I think she was punishing me. She has it in for me anyway, 'cause she knows I mainly come for Janet's sake. I've almost gotten kicked out a couple of times for talking or giggling. Or maybe I'm paranoid. Or maybe I'm trying to get kicked out.

It's already 88 degrees and it's only noon. I do NOT like to turn on my A/C until May. I've griped all winter about being cold, so I will embrace the warmth. I will embrace the warmth. I will embrace the warmth.

I've been on a junk food kick lately and am determined to start eating healthier. Just got home from Walmart, where I bought mostly fresh vegetables, fruit, and other healthy crap. Had few enough items that I could check out in the Express Lane. Still cost me 72 bucks. Holy cow! It's expensive to eat healthy! A cold Starbucks' frappuchino isn't cheating, is it? I didn't think so.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

This weekend I couldn't put off mowing the ~~grass~~ clover any longer. But alas, the riding lawn mower refused to come out of hibernation. So yes, I "push" mowed about an acre, not once, but twice because, as you know, clover doesn't cut easily, it simply bends over. (I know, that was a really long sentence.)

Did I mention it was HOT this weekend? I seriously thought I was having a heat stroke! My poor cats didn't know what to make of it when I came in and literally sprawled out face down on the formica kitchen table.

So I guess I whined sufficiently on Sunday to guilt one of the men in our Small Group to come out this morning and fix my lawn tractor. Thank you, Mark! My knight in shining armor.

Found out tonite that while Mark was at my house, burglars were at his. Cleaned. Him. Out. Plasma TV, jewelery, hunting gear, etc. I'm feeling sort of responsible. :`(

Ramblings

I've taken advantage of my new "senior status" twice now. Discount admission into Jacob's t-ball game and ordering from the Senior Menu at IHOP. Neither time was I asked for proof. Bummer.

Although Sophie is my mouse-catcher, I've decided she's all braun and no brain. On a cold morning, while Stella is cuddled up on my comfy bed...

Sophie is in the cold, hard bathtub.

I have a handy-man in my guest bath right now. (Didn't think he'd appreciate me capturing the moment on camera.) In an old house, you always assume that what should be a quick fix will become a major project. But in this case--just the opposite. I feel like it's Christmas!

I love it when my son calls me in the middle of the day asking me to pray. Yeah, it usually means there's a potential crisis of one kind or another, but it also means that he knows Who is in control, and that I talk to Him often.

What happened to Spring? I'm really over this 40-degree weather already!

Good news. I did not get pulled over by the highway patrol yesterday.

Bad news. I pulled myself over twice, 'cause I was convinceed I was having a heart attack. You tell me. Crushing pain in my chest and between my shoulder blades. Radiating pain in left arm. Pain in both jaws. Shortness of breath. Classic signs, right? I mean, I'm not a doctor, but my nephew is, so that counts.

What to do, what to do? Pulled off the road the first time trying to catch my breath and relax. Second time was to ask my GPS for directions to the nearest hospital. Nineteen miles to a hospital in Crockett. Okay God, if this is NOT a heart attack, please make my symptoms subside before I'm at the crossroads and have to commit to a lengthy delay at a small town ER. At the very last moment (over an hour into the pain) my symptoms eased up. If that's not an answer to prayer, I don't know what is. Thank you, Lord!

On a lighter note, I am LOVING this place in Texas. Janet, we seriously need to explore our idea for the summer.

Despite the fact that it's Spring Break, and the place was packed with college kids, and it allows it's patrons to byob (in large coolers, no less), and we had to share a table with said co-eds....it was a fabulous evening.

D-Day

Since Day 1 of acquiring my kittens, the objective has been to adapt them to the outdoors. Being in the country, I've had to wait until they were big enough to sort of defend themselves. The Vet suggested approximately 5 months old, which conveniently coincides with the perfect time for spaying. He also advised a gradual exposure to the outdoors at increasing doses. Easier said than done. They are terrified of stepping foot out the door. Well....Stella is getting a little braver, but clearly prefers the safety and warmth of the house.

We'll just enjoy the outdoors from the indoors...thank you very much.

Today, they were both spayed. I dropped them off on my way to work and picked them up on my way home. Correction. I picked Stella up. Sophie, my cuddly, affectionate, loving ball of fluff shall now be called, "Sybil." Everyone in the animal clinic--staff, patients and owners--were horrified at the sounds coming from the back room. She went ballistic if someone even looked at her. Um. Let's just leave her here overnight. No charge.

They gave me all the post-op instructions. Pain meds for the next two days. Offer food and water tonight, but don't be surprised is she doesn't eat. Give her a warm, quiet place to stay. Okay. I think I've got it.

As soon as we got home, Stella went right to her food dish and chowed down. Then she found her favorite "tiger tail" and played awhile.

She's now resting comfortably in my lap, purring away. Tomorrow morning we'll pick up ~~Sybil~~ Sophie and try it again.

Don't You Just Love Birthdays?

To all my FB friends, thank you for the lovely birthday wishes. Although I have to say, it's a bit overwhelming. When I send FB birthday greetings, I don't anticipate or require any reply or acknowledgement, but for some reason I feel the need to comment on each and every one sent my way. Well, that didn't happen, so consider this a big blanket of gratitude.

My 4-yr-old granddaughter sang "Happy Birthday" to me over the phone. Oh how sweet the sound! She was curious if I was going to have a party. I LOVE IT. Life IS a party!

My thoughtful husband called to tell me that on his way to work he was driving 55 mph and saw 5 black cows and 5 white cows and he suddenly remembered it was my 55th birthday. He's such a weirdo.

But back to my age. It hit me on Sunday, when they announced the St. Patrick's Day Banquet for Seniors. Not High School Seniors. Senior seniors. Underscoring it with "those who are 55 and older." Seriously?! Am I actually now lumped into the same group as Edra and Homer?

This cake appeared on my desk mid-morning.

Which, as you can imagine, was a little disconcerting. It was brought to me by Scott W. Which in itself could easily explain the oddity. Later, Daniel P. came in to apologize for said cake. Meanwhile, I happened to look at the expiration date on the box--February 25. Finally, I got the low-down from Barbara who explained about donations to the food pantry when bakery items passed their expiration date. Oh great. I've taken a perfectly good vampire cake right out of the mouth of some low-income, deserving tween who may have shared a birthday with me.

After work, Janet and I did our 30 minutes of cardio before heading out to my birthday dinner. We get in a lot of words while ~~running~~ walking on the treadmill. You know you're getting old when most of the conversation centers around sleep patterns, daily menus, new aches, and regularity. Believe me, you need a good friend to talk to about these things.

Dinner at Olive Garden with great friends topped off my day. We actually spent over two hours there, and not because of slow service, but because it was so relaxing and fun...and rare. I threatened to include "Best Quotes of the Night" in my blog today, but since two of us are church secretaries, I think I'll refrain.

Now I'm off to try out my Senior Discount at IHOP. If they know what's good for 'em, they'll ask for my I.D.

Monday

It's Monday and I'm having trouble remembering the last day I saw my grandkids. I'm torn between feeling guilty and feeling exhausted.

It's been a hectic few weeks.

A close friend battling cancer ended up back in the hospital with renal failure. Too soon, he was sent home with hospice. Less then 48 hours later, he was gone.

I had a trip to South Texas planned that was postponed due to all the funeral arrangements.

Drove 18 hours roundtrip to spend a few days in Texas with Neal.

I'm not trying to elicit sympathy. Just telling it like it is.

I think I've reached that point where the only time I have to spend with my grandchildren is when they don't have time to spend with me. And vice versa.

I'm looking forward to summer. What are the odds that a 6 yr. old and a 4 yr. old could manage a 9 hour drive to Texas?

Lake Home

Well, it's not really a "home." It's an RV.

And it's not really a "lake." It's the San Jacinto River.

But it's probably the closest we'll ever come to our dream of having a "lake home."

Neal chose the spot. Spot #178 out of 299 spots. This one being in very close proximity to the fishing dock.

But very far away from the wi-fi signal. Neal, Neal, Neal. It's all about Neal.

So I'm sitting in the clubhouse, where I just finished a vigorous workout in the gym, waiting for my load of laundry to dry, and getting my internet fix.

The drive here was only nine hours. Could've been eight if I hadn't stopped for breakfast and lunch. And if the highway patrol hadn't pulled me over for doing 38 through the toll booth. Are you kidding me? But I did get to show my Concealed Weapon License for the first time. So that was cool. And if my GPS had known that 610 would be closed, so no matter how much she wanted to "recalculate" I still had to drive in circles trying to figure out another way to reach my destination. I've decided it would be about the same price to fly. What with the high cost of gasoline, not to mention meals, tolls and the occasional speeding ticket. Not sayin' that I got a ticket. But if I did.......

I had only been here 20 minutes when some kind of stomach bug hit me. Great timing. I'm thinking it was the quarter pounder I had for lunch. Neal had planned and had been anxiously anticipating dinner at Pappas Seafood, since he's been living on Wolf Brand Chili and smoked sausage for the last three weeks. Now, under normal circumstances, this would've been one of my favorite cuisines (the Pappas--not the chili and sausage). But the smell alone almost made me barf, and I watched Neal polish off a plate the size of a turkey platter piled with shrimp, oysters, fish, and crab, while I managed to force down a few ounces of clam chowder. So not fair.

I woke yesterday feeling fine. Neal had the day off and cooked breakfast, then grilled steak for dinner. I'm hoping for Tex-Mex tonite, and if that happens, all will be right with the world again.

Stella's Turn?

So, after the great hunting skills were demonstrated by my number one favorite cat, Sophie........this question haunted my thoughts: "Are there more mice where that came from?"

And the answer is----"Of course, hammerhead, there are ALWAYS more mice."

In fact, the very next evening (Friday), after a lovely meal of salmon, wild rice, salad and rolls, I dutifully began cleaning up the dishes...Are you ready?...opened the dishwasher...You know it's coming...pulled out the bottom rack..and there he was. Scamperin' around the bottom of the dishwasher and skeedaddlin' into the drain holes. "Oh, Steeeeeeellllllla!!!!! Here's your chance to even the score!"

But do you think she wanted anything to do with it? Um.....no.

So, naturally, I shut the door and started the rinse cycle.

Which left me with a dazed and confused half-drowned mouse. Still breathing.

Got the tongs and literally SERVED the wet mouse to Stella.

Sophie's just dyin' to get in on the action.

But she patiently stands by.

"You have much to learn, grasshopper."

And you'll notice the electronic mouse repeller plugged into the wall.

Lotta good that's doin'.

I know that some of you are totally grossed out by this, and may never step foot in my house again. Just keepin' it real, here. This is my life.

A week ago, I took Lauren to dance class. While most parents and guardians were crammed into the itsy bitsy entryway with one viewing window, I was the obnoxious grandmother on the dance floor with my camera. Miss Tirita gave me the "okay" so it was all good.

I'm working diligently to learn how to use my new Photoshop program. Still haven't figured out how to tilt the image the opposite direction, or make the frame bigger. Maybe you have some hints????

Sunday morning:

Step out of the shower and race to answer the phone. The bassets (AWOL since yesterday afternoon and as usual, not wearing I.D. tags) have shown up at the Davidson's, who are quite familiar with Gracie, though this is the first trip for Duchess. Throw on some sweats and with hair dripping wet, jump in the car to retrieve the runaways.

Get the dogs fed and in their proper place and return to the house. The kittens have finally succeeded in knocking over the trash can, and the stinkers who are finicky about their cat food are chowing down on coffee grounds and paper towels. Go figure.

Trying to quickly finish getting ready for church when I hear a strange noise. Now the kittens have managed to knock the bowl of pecans off the table, and tiny bits of nut shells are scattered all over the dining room floor.

Just about ready to leave, quickly step into the guest bathroom to apply lipstick. The toilet tissue is in shreds on the floor. More of the kitten's handiwork.

This is why I'm not an animal person.

Jeremy & Trista are enjoying a weekend of skiing, and the grandkids are enjoying a weekend with the grandparents. The other set (MeMe and PaPa) have had them since Wednesday night, and we took the hand-off this morning.

It was all fun and games, until the rip-roaring raucous disturbed Uncle Jeff's nap.

Our little "sensitive" guy took his feelings to the drawing pad.

I'm starting to think Facebook is replacing the "blog." After all, when you post something, everyone who has friended you sees it whether they want to or not. And then there's the almost instantaneous feedback. But since I publish my blog annually to hardcopy, I must post at least some pictures of our 2010 Christmas, before this goes to print. Believe me, it's easier than scrapbooking.
